Possible causes for peripheral neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy:
Peripheral nerve problems are referred to as peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral nerves send signals from central nervous system including spinal cord and brain to the rest of the body. Peripheral neuropathy may affect many different nerves affecting various locations of the body in different ways. Peripheral neuropathy can affect single nerve or several nerves at the same time.
Possible causes of peripheral neuropathy:
Many types of neuropathy have an unknown root cause, but various conditions can trigger it. Most common cause of peripheral neuropathy is diabetes. Diabetes is a result of nerve damage because of high blood sugar. Small blood vessel disorders can decrease blood supply to nerves that lead to nerve tissue damage. Neuropathic pain can be caused by benign tumors and neuromas that affect nerve tissue.
Other common causes of peripheral neuropathy are underactive thyroid, obesity, high blood pressure, middle-aged individuals, connective tissue disorders, statin medications, carpal tunnel syndrome, metabolic and endocrine disorders, poor nutrition, inflammation in blood vessels, high levels of toxins in the body including mercury, lead or arsenic and antibiotics such as nitrofurantoin or metronidazole.
Other causes of peripheral neuropathy include chronic liver disease, some types of cancers like multiple myeloma and lymphoma, some poisons such as solvents and insecticides, folate vitamin or B12 deficiencies, some drugs such as HIV treatment or chemotherapy, rare diseases such as neurofibromatosis, congenital neuropathies and excessive intake of alcohol.
Some more health conditions and injuries that causes peripheral neuropathy are:
Guillain-Barre syndrome: it is a specific type of neuropathy which is triggered by an infection.
Infection: peripheral nerve damage caused by Lyme disease, shingles, HIV infection and others cause neuropathy pain.
Injuries: sometimes tight plaster casts and broken bones can put direct pressure on nerves that cause nerve damage.
Chronic kidney disease: abnormal functions of the kidney which is due to chemical and salt imbalances in the body can cause peripheral neuropathy.
Autoimmune disease: some autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis can cause nerve damage.
Alcohol: poor dietary choices caused by alcohol intake can lead to vitamin deficiencies which directly leave negative effects on nerves.
Inherited disorders: the Charcot-Marie-tooth disease is an inherited disorder that causes hereditary neuropathy.
Trauma: traumatic events such as accidents and falls can damage the peripheral nervous system.
Bone marrow disorders: these disorders include abnormal amounts of proteins in the blood, a form of blood cancer, amyloidosis, and lymphoma. These disorders also affect nerves and may cause peripheral neuropathy.
Vitamin deficiencies: deficiencies of B vitamins including B12, B6 and B1, niacin and vitamin E are crucial to nerve health.
Phenytoin: phenytoin medication is used to treat epilepsy. If it is taken for a long time it can cause damage within nervous system.
Viruses: viruses including Epstein – Barr virus, varicella-zoster virus, herpes simplex damage sensory nerves and cause intense shooting pain.
Drugs: drugs to treat bacterial infections, blood pressure medications, cancer medications, anticonvulsants, drugs used to prevent cardiovascular disease and drugs used to lower cholesterol can also cause nerve damage and increase the risk of neuropathy.
Uremia: uremia refers to a high concentration of waste products in the blood due to kidney failure that can lead to neuropathy.
